Roridula Gorgonias (ID394)

Roridula gorgonias is a very rare perennial that grows in a couple of costal mountain areas of Overberg region, Western Cape South Africa. It occurs in scattered colonies in damp places on the mountain. It is a woody, sparingly-branched shrub to 1 meter or more. The genus contains just two species, Roridula gorgonias and Roridula dentata. the plant secretes mucilage to trap insects, but does not directly digest them. Instead, it forms a mutualistic relationship with assassin bugs, whereby the assassin bugs eat the trapped insects and the plant gains nutrients from their droppings.
