THIS LISTING IS FOR 10 SEEDS OF TULIPA SPRENGERI A most elegant and beautiful plant with long, pointed, shiny green leaves and brownish-crimson flowers with reflexed petals. Shade tolerant. Soil Type: Chalk, Sand, Loam Soil Acidity: Alkaline, Neutral, Acid Moisture: Well-drained. How not to marvel at the goblet-shaped, scarlet owers of Tulipa Sprengeri (Sprenger Tulip) when thrown open and shining in the sunshine? Native to Turkey, this lovely tulip opens up in late spring or early summer from long, slender bu bronze buds, elegantly held above clumps of glossy bright green leaves. Among the last of the tulip species to ower, Tulipa Sprengeri, 2 in. long (5-6 cm), is heralded for its ability to seed and naturalize in a garden setting (among shrubs, in open borders and even in the grass), creating beautiful colonies over time. Tulipa sprengeri produces single flowers with the breaking buds a lovely buff gold colour with a contrasting flash of crimson, all held above the shiny green leaves. Originally found in north east Turkey, it seeds extensively but the seedlings resent handling till nearly at flowering size, hence they are difficult to grow commercially which has a bearing on their price. It can be grown in many different garden situations and there are reports of it successfully colonising both shady peat gardens and hot sunny walls. It looks wonderful in dappled shade when, in early summer, individual shafts of light pick up the rich red and gold. Tulipa sprengeri has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
