Fritillaria Ruthenica is native to the Ukraine and southern Russia, usually growing in willow scrub and oak forest by rivers. Tall and elegant stems bear narrow, slightly whorled leaves with a cluster of several dark chocolate-brown, bell-shaped hanging flowers, each strongly marked with deeper chequering. Although it has a sombre colouring, this is a truly appealing plant, which does very well outside in the garden, in a humus-enriched soil in full sun. flowering in April and May.
